A carbonized statue stands in the central square, atop a plinth scored with deep scratches and runes worn down by time. You cannot tell what the statue originally represented. The wind whips at it continually, flaking cinders from its surfaces. When it has eroded to nothing, the citizenry declare a holiday called “The Captured Fire.” The next morning, there is another statue in its place.

Even a newly formed one defies the onlooker’s instinct to name its form. It is amorphous yet rigid, blurred yet motionless, textured like the fractal night sky yet glazed-over by char and runneled wax. It poses, dispersing and defiant, like the soul’s reflection focused onto one figured point.
