A matted bramblebed of purple-leafed vines and tubular willows, moss-eaten rocks and silt cascades, the shells of pale crustaceans and waterlogged shipwreck fragments pave a treacherous carpet over which the sullen river finally oozes into an ever-leaden sea. The cries of birds, though often heard, have no meaning here. The sun rarely is seen through churning clouds that flow, rapidly and in continuous mutation, from the far horizon.
