The waves grind gray sand to powder, and the lee-tide draws it outward and downward, in great billows, to night-depths where no stars shine.

The shore seems endless in both directions, but is uniform in its grayness, and in the unrelenting pull. Not far, inland, though, there are large dunes, like barrows, separating the beach from the rockier expanse that stretches toward the black horizon.
