It is said that this deep, narrow splintering of the thorn-tangled earth was once a proud farming village. The people planted flowers in dried vines and they grew thistly petals that cracked in the arid wind. They cut sections from the larger vines and roasted them above immense bonfires until the innards liquefied and seeped out as a glistening gray liquid. They collected it in ceramic pots and cooled it in the shade for days before consuming it. This provided all the sustenance they requred.

One farmer discovered a nest of sapphire-colored birds that sat atop eggs of jet and from their beaks came angelic music like a sunset’s molten copper pouring into the arms of night. The farmer captured and ate them, and this action is believed to have offended a great power, who snapped the support substrate of the village and pulled it, land and all, into a dark place below the tangle. The ravine is all that marks that there was ever something here.
