Eyes emerge from the murk. One toe, sticky with red. Then another. The corners of a mouth smile crookedly. A warty humped back arches over the antelucan mist. A tongue tastes the air, drips gore.

Not long for day, these cretures disperse when the red dew is drunk, slithering back to moist undergrounds or sumps beneath trees.
